Memories of the Past by Joshua Eldredge Howes

Dennis Cape Cod

Born in Dennisport, Massachusetts in 1839, Joshua Eldredge Howes wrote this memoir in the last years of his life. His lucid recollections begin with a queasy introduction to the sea as a young boy, describe primary education in the town's one-room schoolhouse, continue through a period of teenage carousing, and culminate in an ocean voyage to Peru, Holland, England and Canada. As he recounts stealing sheep from a miserly priest in Nova Scotia, attending a bullfight in Peru, and setting fire to a brothel in Liverpool, Joshua spins a gripping yarn that remains compelling and appealing.
Originally transcribed and annotated by Burt Derick in 2010 this book was published by Brian J. Cook, his great-great-great grandfather, with the support of The Dennis Historical Society.

Paperback 6" x 9", 220 pages plus Appendix.

Gazetteer Of Dennis Burton N. Derick, Editor

Dennis Cape Cod

The "Gazetteer Of Dennis," is an original exploration of the facts and legends behind the various unique place names in Dennis and even who named them. Some have a historical basis – "who was Aunt Lonesome?" Some are comical – " where Was Knock-A-Knees Shoals?" Some are modern – "Where Is Snatch Alley?" and some are legendary – "Where Is Jack Sias ´ Rock And How Did It Get Its Name?"

This is the first edition of an illustrated, living book that explains the place names of the town of Dennis and its environs, based on the most scholarly research by the historians of the town. The public is invited to provide input or queries for future editions. The book contains many maps and three appendices that espouse many of the legends involved in the naming of various Dennis locations.

Capt. Levi Crowell, Civil War Prisoner – His Personal Biography
Compiled & Edited by Peter D. Howes

Capt. Levi Crowell, Civil War Prisoner

Captured by Pickets of the Thirteenth Georgia Regiment while in a small boat heading to Fort Pulaski, Yankee Captain Levi Crowell and his crew spent five months in Confederate prisons. His diaries and letters provide us a fascinating insight into how a simple merchant ship captain from Cape Cod became an Acting Master of a Union ship and was embroiled in the Civil War. Moved from Savannah to Atlanta and then to Madison GA, we are provided his personal account of his capture and life as a Confederate prisoner.
This first-person account has been enhanced with the addition of never-before published pictures, letters, correspondence with Gideon Wells, Secretary of the Navy and other contemporary material. Following his return to civilian life as a Merchant Ship Master, we are treated to his excellent account of his voyages and travails as he commanded a number of vessels, including the Jacob Haskell which made numerous trips across the Atlantic, to South America and the islands.
